Just plain lies.
Feb 21st, 2009 by Take Back NYU!
Near the end of the occupation NYU put some of its dishonesty on wide display. 5 students occupying the building were told they would be offered negotiations with Lynne Brown, and willingly passed their barricades to begin serious talks. As soon as they left, a cadre of NYU security guards swept them away and served them with papers saying they would be expelled. No negotiations ever took place.
To the end, NYU showed just why we need more actions like this occupation: to hold NYU to its word, and to put students first.
Stop crying.
Why is the date on this news Feb. 21? Are you writing from the future?
good for them, expel ‘em all. If they don’t like NYU, why are they paying to attend? HELLO!! transfer out.
can I move into their rooms?
I am sick of students at NYU complaining about how much it costs and the lack of financial aid. You knew what you were getting into when you decided to attend NYU. NYU is very open and honest about its lack of financial aid for students. If you do not like the way things are run, then stop paying for NYU and leave. You chose to come to the school, NYU did not force you to attend. You obviously made the wrong choice for yourself if you do not respect the institution. Don’t make it worse for others who did make the right choice for them.
Keep fighting!!! We’re with you in spirit
I am a student admitted to NYU School of Law Class of 2012. I have a 175 LSAT score, a 3.95 GPA, and interests in international law.
After seeing the NYU administration’s dishonest, violent, and confrontational response to student protestors, I have decided that I cannot attend NYU and will seek another institution where ’service of the public’ begins with ’service of students.’
Sorry NYU, how can I go to a school where there is no trust between the student body and the administration?
I just emailed Housing and I told them good work on kicking the students out. Why attend a university if you don’t agree with its rules.
gosh i hope you protesting douches get expelled from school.
Have you guys read this press release? http://www.nyu.edu/public.affairs/releases/detail/2502
Notwithstanding whether the demands are legitimate, this kind of tone and reaction is disrespectful and gives an ex post legitimation for the protests. NYU is not a public institution - but it should nonetheless be accountable to ethical standards.
Your problem is that you grossly overestimated your own power, which is why an occupation of a building was a dumb idea in the first place. Boo hoo.
If NYU thinks they can treat students like this they got another thing coming! This is not over!
So did they take away your NYU cards as you left? Hahahaha, serves you guys right. BTW i hope you guys cleaned up all the crumbs from your vegan cookies and wonder bars or whatever you were eating up there.
Looking at pictures of the goofy “protesters,” it seems that the building could have been easily retaken by opposing students. I wish I was still a student and could engage in such hilarity.
You take over a private building, you should have to deal w/ the consequences. You want all the benefits of a protest w/o any consequences. You deserve anything you get
The administration’s deception is despicable. But didn’t you guys say you were going into Kimmel for a dance party or something like that, when your intention all along was to take over and occupy a part of the student center? Is deception OK in one case and unacceptable in the other?
Good! You take over a private building, destroy property, and injure a worker. What makes you think you deserve any openness or respect after your show of disrespect to the university and other students.
I HOPE THEY ALL GET ARRESTED AND EXPELLED.
seriously, taking over a STUDENT center!?
Erik: That is the first rule of in-group vs out-group diplomacy. A variation on Mel Brook’s maxim: “Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die.”
I’m all for protest… but not when it’s being done by naive, spoiled idiots.
Come on people!!! Where was your sense of strategy? The negotiating team is supposed to be people from the outside so that this kind of thing doesn’t happen? You want to fight and you want your opponent not to fight back? If NYU was willing to meet your demands in the first place then this wouldn’t have happened. So obviously they were going to fight you, whether by deceit or some other way, just as you were willing to use deceit and any other subversive tactic to meet your goals. You should have picked a few people outside to be in constant communication with those inside for negotiation.
This and your media crisis are two things to learn from in the future. No matter, we live, we learn. Good luck as you move on…
FAIL.
I believe the first breach of trust made was by TBNYU when they broke their pledge to avoid property destruction and busted the door to access the balcony.
I can’t believe these are college students. So dumb. What are they teaching you in school?
YOU ARE NOT ANYWHERE NEAR AS SMART AS YOU THINK.
Take Back NYU “demands” = pseudo + biased + impractical + immature + unfocused + cowardly + social + activists.
At least you’re still considered social activists, in a few people’s minds…
hahahahaha
If that’s true re: no negotiations having taken place, at NYU Local, Washington Sq News, and NY Times, the information being put out is that you did sit down with them and then they wouldn’t allow you back to join the others. Make sure you contact all three and get your side of the story straight!
Plus you need people out there commenting on all these sites because it is overloaded with people too willing to portray you all as “spoiled brats.” As someone else pointed out, whether people agreed with all your “demands,” civil disobedience is a worthwhile tactic and people can’t laud someone like Martin Luther King on the one hand (or one day) and then not understand how that plays out in day-to-day life.
You really need to start spinning your side more. I’m sure you’re exhausted but find a back up team! Good luck & thanks!!
if you all hate nyu so much - why go there? you want lower tuition, but also full scholarships for people in gaza. i can’t think of something more contradictory. have fun finishing your degree at community college.
Jan, you are my hero!
The NYU Adminstration had no reason to negotiate with people that take over their building.
The TBNYU organization is the bully — by rushing into a building, taking over an area and sending an employee to the hospital.
If NYU would have negotiated they would have been very wrong.
This group seems to be very supportive of the Gazans. Just like Israel is very correct in not negotiating with the terrorist and bombers there, NYU must not be terrorized by the terrorist in your group. TBNYU seems to be controlled by an element from that part of the world.
Perhaps, you should have done a little history and background check into NYU, Look at the make-up of the Board of Directors….you think they are going to send 13 scholarships to Gaza…not in your lifetime, pals!
God Bless-NYU
TBNYU got pwn3d by NYU admin.
Great job TBNYU you walked right into their trap…
@Alumni
you speaks the truth
Yay Jan! That was really substantive! You convinced me with your appeal to rationality and unbiased facts. Bravo on a point well argued!
It never ceases to amaze me how those who demonstrate the least intellect are so eager to berate the intelligence of others….
Maybe NYU did put students first by giving the majority of students their center for student life back from the clutches of a loud and noisy few who feel that their beliefs are universal, rather than marginal. The group claims that possibly even as much as 1,000 people were supporting their rally, which may be an inflated number, but let’s use it. NYU has greater than 20,000 students on its rolls. Less than 5% believe that they are speaking for the rest.
EJ seems to think that Jan is foolish for berating the intelligence of others - maybe Take Back NYU is eager to speak for the whole of New York University? I believe it was Bertrand Russell who once said “The problem with this world is that the ignorant are so cocksure, yet the intelligent are so full of doubt.” Maybe a glance in the mirror will enlighten these wayward members of the NYU community.
NYU was right to do so. YOU should have initiated negotiations in the first place, before taking irrationally protesting.
“To the end, NYU showed just why we need more actions like this occupation: to hold NYU to its word, and to put students first.”
let me get this straight… because what you did failed and people now take you even less seriously than before, you want to repeat the same tactic to obtain some sort of negotiation? i guess our tuition money IS going to the wrong places if you haven’t gotten a decent enough education to recognize what a pointless idea that is.
Bravo young idealists! You are the hope and ingenuity of your peers!
I heard a commentary by Mumia Abu Jamal today about Harriet Tubman, who led over a thousand slaves to freedom. Her comment was, “…I’d have saved more, if they’d known they were ’slaves’…”
Stay true to your truth! It is the answer to your great grandchildren who will look back and ask, “why didn’t anybody DO anything?”
You did good!
