The cost of secrecy is that occasionally your secrets slip, with terrible results for our university’s image.  NYU is finding that out right now - ABC News just posted a big article on labor rights abuses at NYU Abu Dhabi in response to Human Rights Watch’s ongoing campaign for worker protections in the emirate.  NYU’s administration failed to respond to questions from ABC, and merely repeats empty promises (”trust us…”) in public debates about NYUAD’s future.  Real accountability would include disclosure of NYU’s spending at the branch campus, and a written commitment to meet the same standards for labor protections at NYUAD as the university holds itself to at Washington Square.
